Chapter 1 The Magic City – Summary 1/2

Zoana, a solitary alchemist living in the forest, is summoned to move to the secret city of Bethellium. The city is considered to be one of the last shelters for magic users in a world where the practice of magic is increasingly disallowed. After being offered a new and improved laboratory by the city envoys, Zoana agrees to move and preserve her knowledge of the rare magic art of Alchemy.
During her travel, Zoana meets Elle, a young shaman living in the city who guides her through the traps and spells that keep the city hidden. During this time Zoana learns that her alchemy skills are well known and that she was specifically sought for her talents.
Upon Zoana’s arrival to the city, Katherine, an apparent important sorceress with a bad attitute, interrupts Elle and Zoana. With the argument that the Grandmaster Melos asked her directly, Katherine sends Elle away and escorts Zoana directly into the main building of the city: The Channeling Tower. Zoana walks in wondering, who this mysterious Grandmaster Melos is.
With certain secrecy, Katherine delivers Zoana to the Grandmaster’s room high in the Channeling Tower. There, the Grandmaster’s butler, Gale, welcomes Zoana and Katherine and explains a more urgent situation to the alchemist: Melos is dying, and only Zoana’s talents can save him. Zoana, feeling cheated, asks the reason of why this situation was never mentioned before. Gale explains that the Grandmaster being the founder of the city is the most important political figure in it. That the possibility that Melos could die would be enough to spread chaos among his allies and enemies. Despite being brought with false pretenses, Zoana agrees to help, understanding the need of the secrecy.
