“Unknown liquid, possibly water. Let’s drink it!”

Yeah, no. That was not the next step to take. She hasn’t got all her equipment with her, but there are easy test she can do first. Pour a little bit on some coloured cloth – cheap dye would dissolve in alcohol. Alcohol also evaporates faster than water so it would be dry sooner than expected. If none of that works then dip your finger in it the cooling effect of alcohol evaporating is quite obvious (as everyone using alcohol to sterilize hands right now should know).

Really, though, finding what the liquid is wasn’t the point. The point was to admit promptly that you have failed and not to panic. The note interfering with proceedings messed that up.
